First Aid at Work (3day)

Aim

To establish a standard, which creates a level of competence for first aid

skills that meet the requirements for the Health & Safety First Aid at Work Act 1981.

Course Information


On completion of training successful candidates should be able to:

  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
  • Injuries to bones, muscles and joints, including suspected spinal injuries
  • chest injuries
  • burns and scalds
  • eye injuries
  • sudden poisoning
  • anaphylactic shock
  • Recognise the presence of major illness and provide appropriate first aid (including heart attack, stroke, epilepsy, asthma, diabetes)

Course Information

On completion of training, successful candidates should be able to:

  • Understand the role of the first aider including reference to:
  • The importance of preventing cross infection;
  • The need for recording incidents and actions;
  • Use of available equipment;
  • Assess the situation and circumstances in order to act safely, promptly and effectively in an emergency;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is unconscious (including seizure);
  • Administer cardiopulmonary resuscitation;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is choking;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is wounded and bleeding;
  • Administer first aid to a casualty who is suffering from shock; provide appropriate first aid for minor injuries
  • (including small cuts, grazes and bruises, minor burns and scalds, small splinters).

*How to manage an infant or child with foreign bodies in their eyes, ears and nose

*How to recognise and manage various serious sudden illnesses

*Treating the effects of extreme heat and cold for an infant or child

*Safely managing incidents involving electricity and the first aid treatments for an electric shock

*How to recognise the severity of burns and scalds for an infant or child and respond accordingly, effectively treating them Recognising and treating an infant or child affected by common poisonous substances

*How to recognise the severity of bites and stings for an infant or child and respond accordingly, effectively treating them

*The responsibilities of a paediatric first aider Minimising the risk of infection to self and others Suitable first aid equipment and personal protection, and how it is used appropriately

*What information is needed in an accident report/incident record, and how to record it Understanding the definition of ‘infant’ and ‘child’ for the purposes of first aid treatment Conducting a scene survey

*Conducting a primary survey on an infant and child

*Identifying when and how to call for help

*How to place an infant and a child into the appropriate recovery position

*How to continually assess and monitor an infant and child whilst in your care

*Identifying when to administer CPR to an unresponsive infant and child who is not breathing normally, and successfully administer CPR using an infant and child manikin

*How to deal with an infant and child who is experiencing a seizure

*Differentiation between mild and severe airway obstructions, treating an infant and child who is choking, and the procedure to be followed after administering treatment for choking

*Knowing the common types of wounds, the types and severity of bleeding and the affect that it has on an infant and child

*Effective management for the control of minor and major external bleeding

*Knowing how to administer first aid for minor injuries

*Knowing how to recognise and manage an infant and a child who is suffering from shock and anaphylactic shock.
